The economy is now almost 4 per cent bigger than it was 12 months ago and growing twice as fast as it was this time last year.
All nine English regions grew for a sixth consecutive quarter during the three months to the end of June and four regions, the East Midlands, the South East, the South West and London have grown bigger than their pre 2008 peak. But according to research published by the Royal Bank of Scotland, the East Midlands is the fastest growing region of the year, expanding by 0.9% in the second quarter and adding to the 1% growth in the last three months.
